Issue: Unable to connect to database. Error = 49153

When logging into an ACCPAC database, user receives the following error message "Unable to connect to database. Error=49153".

This error may be displayed for several reasons:

  • Verify the database server is not offline or shut down.
  • If using Pervasive.SQL Database type, first check the ACCPAC database server to be sure the database engine is started and running.
  • If using Pervasive.SQL Workgroup engine, or running Pervasive.SQL Workgroup as a service, check that under Computer Management > "Services" that the Pervasive engine is started.
  • Verify that the ODBC DSN is also created for the database. Go to Control Panel\Administrative Tools and select Data Sources (ODBC).  This will open the ODBC Data Source Administrator window.  Go to the System DNS tab.  This is where you will verify if the database DSN is created.

Hi Lorraine,

When you run Accpac on a 64 bit OS, it creates the DSN (which is really just a registry entry) the same way it always does. However, on a 64-bit OS, this means the ODBC entry exists as a 64-bit ODBC, which Accpac (as a 32-bit application) cannot find/use. So you get a DB error. The solution to this is to create a DSN using the 32-bit ODBC administrator utility on the 64-bit workstation. You can do this by opening Windows Explorer and browsing to C:\Windows\SYSWow64\odbcad32.exe

Once you find this file, right click on it and choose 'run as Administrator' and create the SYSTEM DSN for Accpac.

Hope this helps.
